OTN Appreciation Day : Pre-Built Developer VMs

OTN Appreciation Day : Pre-Built Developer VMs

I have something to confess, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise – I’m not a very good DBA.
… but I’m not supposed to be… I’m a developer! Sure, I can discuss configuration options and architecture, but don’t ask me to install anything.

This is why I need to say “THANK YOU!” to the Oracle Technology Network for their Pre-Built Developer VMs. By providing a Virtual Machine, that runs on VirtualBox (free), pre-configured with the latest and greatest technology, I can work, learn, and play freely. It’s an incredible benefit that I don’t take for granted.

  1. Very interesting Jorge,
I too am a developer and not a DBA, and I use Apex.
Today I have installed in my PC Oracle XE and Apex 5.02, I wait for 5.1 and the editable grid.
I worked only once with a VM, a little slowly with my old PC… In my new PC I have an SSD and 8gb RAM, do you think are a good idea, to forget my installation and download the VM?

PS: THank you for the Webinar of the past week, when the next?

    • Thank you, Francesco.
With the Developer VM you get full Oracle EE, which is great unless you need to support Oracle XE only. VM’s can be slow to start, but once going they are solid and fast. If you need to reclaim memory and processing you can pause them too. I also like the ability to take Snapshots. You take a Snapshot to save a point in time or before you attempt a tricky change, then you can go back in time. Once I’m done with a VM or upgrade, I move them to an archive drive to keep my SSD lean. It’s also nice to keep different versions of APEX available.

Regarding Webinars, we have one on Node.JS on Nov 1st with Martin D.Souza and Extending EBS with APEX with Sylvain Martel! Watch your inbox for invites!

      Thanks
      -Jorge
